Parasite Control

Parasite Control (Fleas, Ticks & Heartworms)

Fleas and ticks, for example, can be extremely harmful to your pet’s health. To prevent possible epidemics, preventive actions should be implemented all year.

Overview

The prospect of your pet being plagued with parasites is unsettling, but it’s also a medical issue with significant ramifications. Parasites can have a negative impact on one’s quality of life and possibly create life-threatening health problems.

Heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms are examples of common internal parasites. Fleas and ticks are the most common external parasites. Your pet should be parasite-free, both internally and externally.

What makes parasites so dangerous?

Fleas:

Fleas are little, wingless, brown, fast-moving insects that can be found in the fur of your pet. Some animals are sensitive to flea saliva, which can cause irritation and further pain. Fleas can spread an intestinal parasite called tapeworm if consumed when your cat is grooming themselves. Flea infestations can cause anemia, and fleas can potentially spread dangerous infections.

Ticks:

Ticks are spiders that reside in cracks and crevices in the home or in vegetation such as green meadows, woodlands, bushes, and weeds. Some tick bites produce just little discomfort or swelling at the location, while other tick bites can cause significant sickness in your pet. These illnesses, such as Lyme disease, can cause severe health issues or even death if left untreated.

Please keep in mind that if you spot a tick and are unable to remove it, we would gladly assist you. Call us right away to lessen the impact of the tick’s adhesion. It is far safer to have a qualified expert remove the tick for you. Make an appointment with us right once to minimise the tick’s impact.

Heartworm Infection:

When an infected mosquito bites your pet, it transmits heartworms. Heartworms are parasites that dwell in the heart and the blood vessels that surround it. The adult heartworm generates progeny known as microfilariae, which circulate in the blood of the pet. Heartworm infections that go undiagnosed and untreated can be lethal.

When is a diet change needed?

Pets should be fed a balanced wellness diet depending on a variety of characteristics such as their life stage, breed or size, activity level, and any health conditions they may have. When they reach a new life stage, it is advised that they make dietary modifications. For example, moving from puppy or kitten to adult, or from adult to senior, is suggested at the age of seven. If your pet develops any concerns that might be treated with a prescription diet, such as obesity or a food allergy, dietary adjustments may be advised.

When should I seek treatment for parasites?

Fleas:

Schedule an appointment right away if your pet exhibits flea symptoms such as constant scratching, chewing, or licking. Furthermore, flea dirt, a result of fleas that resembles coffee grounds or pepper, may generally be detected by inspecting your pet’s tummy or combing his or her coat with a fine-tooth comb.

Ticks:

If you notice a tick on your pet, do not attempt to burn it off with a match. This is ineffective and may hurt your pet. It is far safer to have a qualified expert remove the tick for you. Make an appointment with us right once to minimise the tick’s impact.

Heartworm Infection:

Prevention is the most effective therapy for heartworms. A monthly oral prescription is one of the most prevalent and successful preventative measures.

The parasite is spread by mosquito bites, and the pet normally displays no symptoms for months. Later symptoms include difficulty breathing, coughing, loss of weight, fatigue, and listlessness. In many situations, dogs may not exhibit visible symptoms until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage. To screen for heartworms, a yearly blood test is suggested. If detected early, this condition may be cured, although it is expensive.

How can I keep parasites at bay?

Based on your pet’s risk factors and current health, our veterinary experts can gladly assist you in selecting the appropriate preventative program. It’s critical to talk to us once a year about which pest control treatments are best for your home depending on your pet’s daily routine.
