When should I microchip my pet?

How does microchipping work?
In a reasonably painless veterinarian operation, a little microchip (the size of a grain of rice) is inserted beneath the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades. All animal care institutions (shelters, hospitals, etc.) will scan the pet for a microchip using a specific microchip scanner that is easily waved over the skin if a pet is located. When a microchip is discovered, a specific hotline is dialed, and the pet is reported missing. The pet owner is then contacted right away and provided contact information for picking up their pet.
